The Brewery
The brewery in Ryesgade
The original brewery and restaurant in Ryesgade opened in September 2003. The inventory in the brewery was purchased through an American company, operating from the Czech Republic.
The brewing of the beer started only a few months before the opening of Nørrebro Bryghus. The first brews were a success as four of the five first brewed beers were remarkable. However, we were soon challenged. The storing tanks had not yet arrived! We were able to brew beer, but we had no place to store it. This unfortunately meant that we had to stop producing beer and we feared the worst: Would we run out of beer? The answer came promptly the last Friday in September. Four of the beers ran out within only a few hours! We were pleased with the fact that our guests enjoyed the beer, but frankly it would have been nice if the beer had not ran out so quickly. The next couple of months were very busy, just as one beer was ready for drinking our thirsty guests emptied the tank in no time.
The solution to the problem was an expansion. Two fermenting tanks, three storing tanks and one extra brewer meant that we could keep up with demand.
The number of guests did not decrease as we had expected – and they were still thirsty.
The capacity of the brewery as it is now, is just below 200.000 litres or 52,800 gal a year. This covers the demand from the restaurant, the bar and the limited amount of beer that is sold as “take away”.
The quality has become better and beer types plenty. In May 2005 the 29th beer type brewed at Nørrebro Bryghus, was born. Based on this we believe that we have reached our goal: brewing a wide variety of characteristic and perfect beers - from the classic to the more experimenting. Not only do we believe that we have reached our goal, but also our ambition: to brew the best and widest variety of beer.
The brewery in Hedehusene
Not long after the opening of the brewery in Ryesgade there was an increasing demand to buy our beer on bottle. The brewery had their hands full, so to be able to meet demands an expansion was necessary.
The result was a brand new, modern and fantastic brewery with its own bottling line. The capacity for the brewery is approximately 400.000 litres or 105,000 gal a year. If the demand should increase further it is possible to expand the brewery.
The placement of the brewery in Hedehusene between Copenhagen and Roskilde helps to secure a daily contact between the two breweries. It is the same brewers, who take care of the brewing at both breweries. Hence we follow the same goals, traditions and recipes in both breweries.
The brewery in Hedehusene has also become the main administration office for Nørrebro Bryghus.
We entered into a contract with House of Beer, the most professional distributor of special beer in Denmark. The bottled beer became a reality in March 2006. At first it was the three favourites from Ryesgade, Ravnsborg Rød, New York Lager and Bombay Pale Ale, which were introduced to a broader crowd. The three beers can now accompany dinners and cosy moments in most parts of the country. In brief the beer is found where the best of speciality beer is sold, which is in special beer shops or supermarkets such as Føtex, BILKA, SuperBrugsen, ISO, SuperBest, Magasin, Salling or Irma. If your local supermarket does not sell beer from Nørrebro Bryghus, then ask for it. It is possible for them to order it.
In near future we will expand our product range to include other exiting new beer from the brewery in Hedehusene. We promise that there will beer specially made for Christmas, Easter and for other special occasions.
